Blog Series & Tags
Click any of the links below to take a look at some of the series that I have written for the blog.
Recurring Series (History-Inspired and Other Content)
Rethinking Fantasy is my ongoing series about delving into a particular trope in fantasy worldbuilding, and examining how those elements would have actually been perceived in a Medieval or Renaissance or Early Modern context.
Media Studies is where I look at other forms of media--video games, books, TV shows, etc--and talk about what lessons I've taken from there to inform RPGs.
Magical Practices is my ongoing series about different traditions of magic from around the world.
Practical Ideas is my series for practical, implementable hacks and/or advice for GMs and players. This series is far less focused on specific historical influences, and more on general RPG tricks that I've learned from my time playing in and running games.
Solo Games is an ongoing series where I review and share resources about solo TTRPGs. A lot of these are journaling games, and the amount of complexity varies game-to-game. I hope everyone can learn to embrace the wonderful world of solo RPGs as I have, and that you can use this series to find your new favorite solo game.
Campaign Reflections is a space for me to look back at my completed campaigns and reflect on what went well and what I need to improve on. These will be pretty sporadic, since I only post these when I finish lengthy campaigns only!
Tags (Interviews, Reviews, Announcements)
Reviews is exactly what it sounds like: the space where I review TTRPG products. There might be overlap with other series, like Solo Games.
Interviews is also exactly what it sounds like: transcripts of interviews that I've done! I've talked to authors and TTRPG creators as part of this, and it has produced some of the most interesting conversations that I've had about games.
Now Live! is mostly announcement posts when I have a product that goes live, or it might include a deeper delve into my design process. But if you're looking for the TTRPG products that I've written and are for sale, you can find them here... or you can look at the link in the header for a more direct list!
Concluded and Past Series
August 2025: Coins and Currencies focuses on using currency as a key part of your worldbuilding. I talk about building a realistic foundational currency system, and then adding important flavorful elements on top of that foundation. This series can help you go beyond D&D's "gold piece, silver piece, copper piece" system and build something unique and historically grounded that actually reinforces the themes and content of your world.
Worldbuilding with Government Life Cycles is made up of two mini-series where I identify a historical pattern or quirk and then use it as a framework to develop a fictional world's history. By taking an outline of a cycle that a number of historical governments have gone through, we can quickly write a history for a government that sounds convincing and has more depth than something that is static--the government as it exists at the table only. This series may return if there's another Cycle that I decide I want to write about!
January 2025: Worldbuilding in Five Glasses is my January series going through how to use significant historical beverages as an important part of your worldbuilding, based on Tom Standage's book A History of the World in Six Glasses.
December 2024: Reflections features my reflections on my first year in the TTRPG industry.
October 2024: Revising Vampires is focused on the original folklore & adaptation of vampires. We explore how to use more historical vampires in TTRPGs, including Vaesen and D&D.
Summer 2024: Guide to Goblins is focused on exploring the history of different goblin mythology from around the world, and discussing how you can use them to vary goblins in your fantasy TTRPGs. (May be revisited with a final product at some point, TBD).
